Oakland – Fox TheaterThe Greater Hood
The Fox Theater, originally named West Coast Oakland Theater, opened its doors in 1928 as a nearly 3000 seat movie theater. It began its run showing silent films and graduated to 'talkies' when William Fox took ownership, renaming the theater to the moniker we are familiar with today. Sadly, the theater closed its doors in 1966 but reopened in 2009 as a shining landmark of Oakland and destination for live music. While a fox isn't the animal you would normally pair with a crowded, loud venue, we think it still fits beautifully, not only for its namesake but for its cunning ability to adapt and survive.
