Oakland – Lake MerrittThe Greater Hood
Lake Merritt is a great escape from Downtown Oakland and is also historically significant for being the first official wildlife refuge in the United States (est. in 1870). Originally the lake was a large tidal lagoon surrounded by lush wetlands, but it went through a series of changes through the 19th and 20th Centuries, eventually resolving to the bird refuge it is today. If you have ever visited Lake Merritt, you are familiar with the plethora of birds in the area, namely the gaggles of geese.
